Eye Color

It appears that most Tiliqua have eye color of which consist of orange to brown nearing red in certain species or individuals. From my observation, Rugosa and Chimaerea which seem to have really dark eyes also share this universal eye coloration.

Differences in color

Research in eye color has not been a significant focus to many owners who appraise their skink from morphological and physiological standpoints.

It wasn't until the last few years when I serendipitously came across a single individual (S. intermedia) with light green eyes that I started to take note of eye color.

This lone skink is female and is an extremely dark Northern named Maurine. Take a look at her eye in the lower right column and see for yourself.

Eye color and Gender

In the past it was thought that eye color, more specifically the density of color, indicated gender. A supposed male blue tongue had a brighter more intense color (orange) while a female lacked such intensity (brown).

Personally, unless you can see gradations of color beyond the scope of most mortals, this theory of gender distinction seems to be erroneous in all the blue tongues especially in T.G.G and T.SP. However in my most recent observations of  scores of Northerns in my collection I have noticed that every male I own have very bright orange eyes while the majority of all my females have pale brown to dark orange eyes. The remaining females do have bright orange eyes.

I will continue to investigate this matter further whenever out in the "field" or at home.

Note: Capturing their genuine eye color will require the right conditions and only a few pictures here reflect their eye color accurately.

Breeding for Eye Color

Maurine's "green eyes" isn't always green. Sometimes it's light brown with green highlights but there are days that Maurine's eyes are brighter. Eventually, I would like to breed back a Maurine baby to her to see if this trait will appear again in the babies. Maybe within the next few years I'll work on this project.
